The beloved Yorkshire Terrier began its story in the mid-1800s in northern England, where Scottish weavers brought small terrier breeds with them as they moved to work in the textile mills of Yorkshire. These little dogs weren’t bred for show — they were bred for work.
In the coal mines and clothing mills, Yorkies earned their keep by hunting rats and other vermin that infested the tunnels and factory floors. Their small size, fearless nature, and quick reflexes made them perfect for squeezing into tight spaces and protecting valuable goods.

As the Industrial Revolution spread and the dogs’ charm became undeniable, the Yorkshire Terrier began its transformation — from gritty mine ratter to refined companion. By the late 1800s, they made their way to America, where their elegance, intelligence, and loyalty quickly won hearts.
Today’s Yorkies may live on laps instead of in mines, but their courage and determination still shine through — a little dog with a big history. The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most beloved companion dogs in the United States- small on size but bursting with confidence, personality and heart.
